“The other whales [and] the seals know when the orcas come around, they clear out,” Hardy said as he steered toward a spot where a humpback had been spotted that morning. “The moms with their calves especially. You won’t see them with orcas around.” Whale watching isn’t all action — far from it. For a good six or seven minutes, those of us aboard the boat waited in “Jaws”-like anticipation for the humpback to come back. The goal is to spot the elusive breach.
