Ontario’s new provincial park — the first of its kind in 40 years — will be located in cottage country about half an hour east of Bracebridge, the Star has learned.

Piccini said in an interview that construction will start next fall, and he expects it to open in 2026. The park will have walking and cycling trails, as well as accommodations for those who like more remote camping, and for those who prefer campsites with electricity as well as cabins “for those who maybe aren’t quite comfortable doing the portage or doing backcountry camping,” said Piccini.Piccini said the ministry looked at what’s popular with existing provincial parks, and will seek public input starting Thursday after he makes the announcement in Bracebridge.

Piccini — who spent many summers camping in Ontario parks with his dad, paddling with him at Bigwind on Father’s Day weekend — said plans will be available online starting Thursday.
