she hopes the book will serve the same purpose for others as the process of writing it did for her: identifying where each of us can make a difference. ⤵️

Sofia Warren was relatively new to political and community organizing when she first learned about Julia Salazar’s campaign for the New York Senate. But thecartoonist was intrigued by the young democratic socialist’s successful run for office and thought covering Salazar could be a way to "integrate" her day job with her budding political awareness.

There was an early draft where I basically transcribed, like, 45 minutes of the dullest part of [a] staff meeting, where we were just sitting around talking about Google Drive and calendar invites and that sort of thing, because I felt obligated to try and communicate the reality of what being in this office was like. That was the objective, so I hope that some of that comes through.

My hope is that its value is for people who are curious and have questions and doubts and are feeling like they don't quite know where to start. [I want it to be] a book that reaches those folks who aren't quite ready to be preached to or feel uncomfortable about that, and are more looking to explore what these worlds are like.SW:

As far as comfort level, I feel really lucky that I was able to do this under the guise of this book project, because I think I might not otherwise have felt comfortable. It can be really intimidating, especially if you're feeling like you don't have the knowledge base, to just show up. Especially as people who are super knowledgeable or intensely involved in strategy are talking about stuff that feels like it's going over your head.
