"When reports of this relationship first surfaced, I asked Phil directly if this was true and was told it was not. It's been very hurtful to now find out that this was a lie."In his initial statement, Schofield said that he had engaged in a "consensual" relationship, calling his actions "unwise, but not illegal". He added that he had lied about the affair in an effort to "protect" the ex-colleague.
