With over 135 top-shelf bottles towering above its stately lounge, the Eclipse II from Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours is the first Antarctic expedition equipped to adequately appease whiskey geeks. Here's what it's like to be onboard.

Antarctica was once a destination reserved for research scientists and the most rugged of adventurers. How could it not be? Throughout much of the 20th century, reaching the glacier-swaddled end of the Earth would necessitate hitching a ride aboard an icebreaker or a military plane. Not exactly vessels designed for comfort. But there's been a sea-change over the past decade: the emergence of luxury cruise liners, purpose-built to explore this far-flung region in style.

"I've been on dozens of cruises in all parts of the world, and I can say, unequivocally, this is the best all-inclusive at sea," says Nicole Sunderland, a luxury content creator and whisky enthusiast. On a recent cruise, she was treated to an array of rare single malts served over crystal-clear 1,000-year-old glacial ice, pulled fresh from Antarctic shores just hours earlier. "It was invigorating.

"We have whiskey from all over the world — rye, bourbon, scotch, Australian," he confirms of the carefully managed stock. "If you ask me for personal recommendations, I like to get a sense of your palate and then steer you towards maybe some lesser-known brands."At one point during the journey, select guests are invited to a one-off whiskey tasting offered in a hidden lounge.
