The province issued a new protocol to its Crown prosecution service which says Alberta lawyers will now decide whether or not to pursue firearms charges.
EDMONTON—Alberta has fired a shot across the bow of the federal government in the contentious debate over its proposed firearms restrictions.
“This is our constitutional jurisdiction, and this is a choice that we get to make,” said Alberta Justice Minister Tyler Shandro in Edmonton on Thursday. The standoff appears to be the latest escalation over what has been an increasingly controversial issue for the federal Liberals, as well as further pushback from an Alberta government that recently drew a line in the sand by adopting a Sovereignty Act, ostensibly to limit federal overreach.
New amendments to Bill C-21 were brought forward last month, sparking widespread backlash from First Nations leaders, provinces and NHL goalie Carey Price, as critics slammed them for banning many firearms used by farmers and hunters. The bill was already facing criticism from gun owners in Canada and the amendments brought that criticism to a fever pitch.
The jurisdictional grab by the province is slated to start on Jan. 1. A letter explaining as much was sent by the province to the federal justice minister on Thursday.
