'This is just the beginning': Rivalry Series headed to Saskatoon, with hopes for more big hockey events down the road

International women's hockey is coming to Saskatoon, with a goal for the city to host more Hockey Canada events going forward.

The Rivalry Series will skate into Saskatoon in February, and local organizers say — with a great deal of anticipation — that there’s a lot more where that came from.

The last big international women’s event Saskatoon hosted was the Four Nations Cup in 2018. The United States beat Canada 5-2 in the final at SaskTel Centre. Kelly Boes, the executive director of Saskatoon Minor Hockey, said Tuesday that the women’s side of the sport is growing quickly here. Saskatoon had 31 female teams and 443 players 10 years ago, and that number has since climbed to 50 teams and 730 players. Each of those teams has at least one female coach.Organizers hope that a couple of players with local ties, Emily Clark and Sophie Shirley, will suit up for Team Canada in February.
