StateofPride follows raymondbraun and his conversations with LGBTQ people attending and organizing Pride events in Tuscaloosa, Salt Lake City, and San Francisco.
devoted to LGBTQ visibility and acceptance, first connected with the queer community online. But like many young people, it was Raymond’s first Pride that opened his eyes to the full vibrancy and power of creating space for the community to come together face to face, raise our voices, and celebrate who we are.
From a married lesbian couple in Alabama who travel two hours to attend their first Pride, to an ex-Mormon who convinces his family to march with him in Utah, the stories capture a range of experiences and perspectives not often singled out in broader Pride narratives that tend focus on big cities.
RB: There is something about being with people face to face, and having physical proximity that really helps you feel like you're not alone or isolated. The connections you can make online are very powerful, and the stories that you tell can really foster empathy. But there's something special about being with people directly in your community that can foster a sense of belonging.
TV: Right, some of your subjects, particularly trans women of color, remarked on how Pride tends to center cis white men. Was that a consideration in deciding whether you would appear in the doc yourself?
