Jere Cobb and his passenger, Paul Lewis, had been flying over southwest Houston surveying property on May 16, 1984.
They were heading back to the Tenneco helipad on Post Oak near San Felipe when the engine of the Bell-47 helicopter they were in began to sputter and quit.
Rather than land near a house or building, Cobb put it down in the right northbound lane of the Loop. "I landed right behind a car," the former Marine pilot told the Chronicle's Eric Hanson for the next day's editions."It was a very rapid descent, but this is something all pilots practice. It really happened too fast for me to be scared."In other news, note the story at the bottom on the shooting at Booker T. Washington High School. A senior at the school walked into a classroom, shot at the teacher inside and wounded his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself.
