This cold snap could be winter's last hurrah, with Alberta seeing temperatures below -40 C and Nova Scotia getting 55 cm of snow

The prairies, mainly Alberta, were smacked with a blast of Arctic air that has lingered since Friday. Many cities in the province are under extreme cold weather alerts. In Alberta, extreme cold weather alerts are issued when temperatures drop to -40 C or below.

Atlantic Canada will face a heavy storm coming in from the south, with unofficial reports already saying parts of Nova Scotia received more than half a metre of snow. The system avoided the Great Lakes, leaving Ontario and Quebec untouched, but Nova Scotia was its bullseye, Phillips said. The good news, Canada, is that spring is coming. The bad news, winter still hasn’t had its last hurrah yet, Phillips said. Though for Atlantic Canada, this might be it.

In the United States, the cold air that hit the prairies is now heading south, making its way on a path east of the Rockies.
