A gospel choir, a Ukrainian soprano and an Afghan tabla player form the unique blend from which the composer Roxanna Panufnik has created an extraordinary initiative, “Sleep, Jesus, Sleep”

Panufnik is one of the UK’s leading composers, particularly celebrated for her choral and liturgical works. She is adept at mingling traditional music from diverse cultures with her own distinctive harmonic language and immerses herself in cultural research appropriate to the project, consulting advisers from relevant organisations and backgrounds and always crediting the origins of ideas she employs. When it comes to multifaith work, she is a woman with a mission.

Since devising “Sleep, Jesus, Sleep”, she says, she has been “living and breathing” it. “I’m driving my family mad,” she remarks, “but at the moment I can hardly think about anything else.
