“People know that I work part-time which [is] true and gives me an excuse to be anywhere at any time,” says Kristjansen, who blogs under this nom de plume at . “People know that I have rental houses. And people know that my wife works from home. All of which combine to explain enough to people as to why I can work part-time and not be bankrupt.”
Kristjansen worries that if people know about his success then they will encourage more spending. “It becomes harder to convince people you don't want to spend money on things when they know you have millions of dollars in the bank,” says Kristjansen. His ability to keep expenses low is the only reason he can take the step away from his day job now. Essentially, stealth wealth is another trick used by those in the FIRE movement to save more. The less people know about his wealth, then the less they expect Kristjansen to spend, allowing him a weekend with friends without the pressure to splurge.Let’s be honest, it’s not easy stepping away from the workforce, declaring yourself essentially retired when you’re young. It’s not the norm.
When he stepped away, he decided to continue working at his old job for one day a week. It allowed him a social outlet and he enjoyed the work more once he didn’t have to do it everyday. He continues to keep his professional presence updated. It gives him an escape route – and an ability to easily jump back into the workforce – if the need does arise.There’s a big caveat for anyone “retiring” during a record bull run.
