Lancashire Constabulary has released statistics showing how many missing people reports are investigated by police
And so it is often our local force who are tasked with looking into reports for concerns for welfare. When someone is reported missing Lancashire Constabulary risk assesses the individual, including any previous similar behaviour and vulnerability, and will deploy a number of resources including specially-trained officers, the force's helicopter and search dogs in a bid to find them.
The statistics released show that in 2019 a total of 8,853 people were reported missing across the county. In 2020 there were 8,414 missing person reports and the following year a total of 10,161 were reported. Lancashire Constabulary has clarified that the increase in 2021 is down to a procedural change brought about when cases of absent people were included in the figures.
When an individual is reported missing other agencies are often involved. Where concerns are raised about possible sightings close to the motorway system for example National Highways are often deployed while Lancashire Fire & Rescue Service are often called upon to help with wide-scale searches.
