Third Conservative leadership debate suffers from poor attendance and lack of viewers via nationalpost
Jean Charest, Roman Baber and Scott Aitchison made their final pleas to the few dozen members who were watching the live feed online on Facebook. At its peak, approximately 300 people tuned in to watch it but near the end of the debate, less than 100 people were still listening.
Charest’s team wasted no time in attacking Poilievre for not showing up and even put up a website — wherespierre.ca — to show a fake video footage of an empty seat with Poilievre’s name on it during opening and closing remarks during the debate. The third debate was moderated by Rob Batherson, the party’s president, and was divided in English and French segments. They mostly focused on areas that had not been thoroughly covered in previous debates, such as Indigenous issues, transportation and climate change.
Baber promised to start rethinking the life of the reserves and to work with “the new generation of Indigenous leaders and Indigenous business leaders” to improve their quality of life. Aitchison said he would work to have a “real” relationship with First Nations and Inuit. Baber took a slightly different approach and said Conservatives should not be afraid to take on the “environmental mob.” He, however, said that the secret to absorb greenhouse gas was with trees and that Canada should plant more of them.
