‘We’re all family, so when we’re up onstage it’s just like playing backyard football’
With a jazzy sound, magnetic personalities and crisscross interplay, The N.E.I.G.H.B.O.R.S. call to mind classic conscious-rap combos like Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul. But more Southern. Turns out The N.E.I.G.H.B.O.R.S.’ bonds go all the way to blood. Don and Jnarly are brothers. Shaego is their cousin.
Talented solo artists can be interesting, of course. But there’s something about the group dynamic, that when it clicks gives the music more texture, more colors, more everything. And more giddy-up too, as Jnarly explains. “The energy is always there. If you don’t have it, you look to your right or your left and your brother’s got you. That’s what I think is dope. They make me even more hyped.
The N.E.I.G.H.B.O.R.S.’ upcoming debut album is titled “OG and Sweat Tea.” The first cut released off it is “Badu,” a blacklight, electric piano driven jam dedicated to Erykah Badu, the retro-soul star and one of Shaego’s favorite artists. The track started with Shaego. And then, he says, “We alley-ooped it to each other.” Don calls “Badu” the “tone-setter” of the album. Other key tracks from “OG and Sweat Tea” include “Playa” and “Talk To Me” .
After the Madison home Don and Jnarly’s family was living in burned down in a fire, the trio grew ever tighter. When they first started the musical group that eventually became The N.E.I.G.H.B.O.R.S., there were a total of six rappers involved. But as things got more serious and personalities mixed , the three that were fam remained. They came up with their group’s name after a night of recording at a Huntsville studio, while standing out on a corner on Governors Drive.
