A youth camp is one of the ways James Smith Cree Nation is healing through tradition and culture.

On Sept. 4, 2022, 11 people were killed and 17 were injured in the two communities. Myles Sanderson, 32, was identified as the sole killer.

Staff at BCCS wanted to set up a cultural camp for the youth, which took place in May. The school funded the first week and the community’s cultural program funded the remaining three; it was open to students in all grades, and to teachers.Article content He says they’re trying their best to do what they can for people’s mental health, bringing in therapists, Elders, and guidance from medicine people. Burns says the community needs a private space for people to seek supports because some are reluctant to visit the clinic or band office, which are more public.
