Flats member Susan Giordano first fell in love with tennis at a beginner group lesson on an outdoor public court in the early ’90s but prefers the winter tennis season for its regularity, as do many other dedicated players she knows. “I play four to five times per week,” says Giordano, another student of Thomson’s. “I know that my winter tennis schedule can be pretty much established in advance, similar to a workout schedule.

The Eglinton Flats indoor season runs from Oct. 1 to April 30, drawing members from approximately 10 summer clubs across Toronto. The seven-month memberships, which often sell out months in advance, allow players to book time on one of six courts in the tennis bubble . Members also play in leagues, on the singles ladders or round robins; take private or group lessons; or put their names on “looking for a game” signup sheets.
