These ForbesUnder30 founders are now running the Next Billion-Dollar Startups: by AlexandraNWil

An analysis of the 125 companies that have made the Next Billion-Dollar Startups list since its inception five years ago shows that more than one-fifth had cofounders who were previously selected for the Forbes Under 30, our annual list chronicling the youngest and most promising founders. Of those, at least nine have gone on to achieve that billion-dollar valuation. Others were acquired just shy of hitting that number.

“Like a lot of startups, it was a systemic trait where it was company full of young people being promoted to management positions that didn’t know how to manage,” says Altman, now 30, who sees being a young founder as an advantage. “They were like ourselves, so we were attuned to that problem in a personal way.”

A few years earlier, the cofounders had been close to bailing. When they joined famed accelerator Y Combinator in 2011, they were planning on building an education tool to help professors know when students had questions during lectures. It immediately failed. They then spent another year trying to build a competitor to Google Analytics. That also failed.
