With the myriad products and hyperpigmentation treatments promising great results, two skin experts give advice on the best to try, and how to get rid of hyperpigmentation for good.

There are however ingredients that may render many pigment inhibitors ineffective. “Benzoyl peroxide is an active ingredient that you want to use on its own, because it oxidises the bacteria whereas a lot of tyrosinase inhibitors are antioxidants.”Their effectiveness is usually down to the texture and delivery system. “Serums have a very fine and lightweight texture, so they are able to penetrate the skin,” shares Ayodele.

“Serums with a higher fat content tend to absorb better into the skin, as the skin is a waxy layer,” shares Dr Rattan. “Watery serums and silicone-based gels tend to remain on the surface of the skin and don’t feel like they’re sinking into the skin.”The first port of call is avoiding ingredients that may irritate the skin. “Avoid ingredients in your products such as denatured alcohol, essential oils, or fragrance,” says Dr Vanita Rattan.

Your best bet is using products with ingredients that when formulated together have the power to strengthen the skin to help prevent hyperpigmentation in the first place and also fade any existing or new hyperpigmentation. “There are several pathways to creating melanin and you want a mixture of ingredients that all work in slightly different ways on pigmentation,” shares Ayodele. “It’s important to know that the best results will come from combining multiple ingredients.

“Exfoliating ingredients can also help to a small extent – glycolic, lactic, azaelic acid all help to smooth and refine the skin texture, getting rid of old skin cells that can hang on to stale pigment on the surface of the epidermis,” she says. “Sunscreen is also a major ingredient and tool in the fight against hyperpigmentation.”
