Times Higher Education has published its annual ranking of the world’s top universities for 2023, listing 15 South African institutions among them.

The ranking looks into an institution’s global performance and judges research-intensive universities, with the full list comprising 1,799 universities across 104 countries and regions.

This year’s ranking analysed over 121 million citations across more than 15.5 million research publications and included survey responses from 40,000 scholars globally. “Overall, we collected over 680,000 data points from more than 2,500 institutions that submitted data,” said Times Higher Education.

Mainland China now has the fourth-highest number of institutions in the top 200, having overtaken Australia, and its share of the top 100 positions has climbed to seven from only two in 2018.continues to lead the pack in South Africa, ranking 160th overall, climbing 23 places over the past year from 183rd. It ranked 155th in 2021 and 136th in 2020.is second, having overtaken the University of the Witwatersrand in the 2021 ranking.

North-West University swapped places with the University of Johannesburg and dropped many places on the global list. The University of Pretoria is also a big faller on the list, losing spots globally and locally.
