At the conclusion of the first week of the trial on Friday, Jan. 13, Dr. Matthew Bowes gave testimony about the autopsy he performed. The first was on Cook’s right severed leg, which had been found by a family friend on Sept. 27, 2020, close to where Cook’s truck had burnt off of the Pitman Road. Bowes noted the amount of decomposition of the remains did cause some limitations in his examination, but that he was still able to form an opinion on the major aspects of the case.

Bowes said the most probable scenario from the injuries is that Cook bled to death. But he couldn’t completely discount other injuries as being contributing factors, such as the injury to his brain and his heart. Due to decomposition, Bowes couldn’t provide an accurate number of the sharp force injuries, but he said there were many, especially to the chest.

“I will tell you that in my community when we see sharp force injuries on the hands of a person who has died of sharp force injuries, we often describe those as defensive type injuries,” he testified. “In other words, injuries that were obtained in an effort to defend one's own life.”
