Happy International Women's Day! I want to start by saying thank you to all the men and women who support and encourage women in society.Lily Parr, who represented England in their first ever women's international match, is the only English female footballer to be commemorated with a statueThere’s that old saying, ‘Behind every great man is a great woman’. A saying that is probably ageing in this mad world. In my case though, alongside me are a number of great men and women.
Did you know there are 240 statues honouring sportspeople in our country? Astonishingly, only three of those statues are of women.Allow me to assist: Former England footballer Lily Parr, two-time Wimbledon champion, Dorothy Round and Olympic pentathlon winner, Lady Mary Peters. Incredible women, who have accomplished greatness.
It’s the extra opportunity to encourage the next generation to achieve their dreams, and to further recognise some of the women who achieved illustrious careers despite the odds stacked against them.
