The Tashme Project is a marvellous verbatim performance drawn from interviews with Japanese Canadians who were interned during the Second World War
Tickets & Info: From $25 at firehallartscentre.ca
Canadian theatre artists Julie Tamiko Manning and Matt Miwa both had grandparents interned at the camp east of Hope known as Tashme. Manning’s mother was born there. Neither knew much about their family histories due to the reluctance of that second generation of Japanese Canadians, the Nisei, to revisit the past.
Life for the Nisei before the war seems pretty ordinary. One woman, played with sweet humour by Manning, explains that she attended different churches because “Mom didn’t care what church we went to. She just wanted us out of the house so she could clean.”
