Influential Preston suffragette Edith Rigby who threw black pudding at MP is having the M55 link road named after her

L-R LCC Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Growth Aidy Rigott, Head of Planning and Enabling, Homes England, Nicola Elsowrth and Leader of Preston City Council Councillor Matthew Brownin 1907, Edith took her activism one step further, forming the Preston branch of a militant suffragette organisation, the Women's Social and Political Union . The WSPU were famous for adopting radical methods for getting their plea for women's votes heard.

After setting fire to Bolton’s so-called ‘Soap Baronet's’ estate, Edith is known to have said: "I want to ask Sir William Lever whether he thinks hison Rivington Pike is more valuable as one of his superfluous houses occasionally opened to people, or as a beacon lighted to King and Country to see here are some intolerable grievances for women". The peak of Edith's campaign came when she planted a pipe bomb at the Liverpool Cotton Exchange on July 5 1913.
