had the potential to become the next big “fan culture wars” spectacle, as legions of book-readers and game-players seemed destined to be unsatisfied with various aspects of the Netflix series. And to top it all off, it had a woman showrunner, Lauren S. Hissrich, who spoke openly about social justice issues and publicly proclaimed she’d make the cast of the series more diverse than what we’d seen so far.
Usually when we see high profile figures managing some property, we only hear their intentions through Variety interviews or occasional press releases. But Hissrich is handling things differently. She’s incredibly active on social media, both Twitter and reddit especially, and has been up close and personal with fans in a way that you almost never see in this industry.
Here’s a thread Hissrich wrote on Twitter regarding a common fan complaint, the changing of the Brokilon Forest subplot. She explains that this was a hard decision, but one they ultimately felt they had to make. It’s a really insightful read into the adaptation process:, the official subreddit she’s been active in for months now. It’s the original pitch forwhen she was trying to get her vision of the show made.
It is flat-out impossible to imagine say, JJ Abrams getting this personal directly with fans about the process ofdecision-making. The same goes for David Benioff and DB Weiss, who were practically viewed as villains by the end ofthanks to all their decisions about the story, and they never gave any satisfying answers about why they did what they did to anyone, much less communicate directly with fans in this fashion.
