Anya Taylor-Joy reflects on turning down a Disney Channel pilot in order to star in Robert Eggers' TheWitch. ' It gave me the cornerstones of the way I work now, which is essentially the idea that there is no hierarchy on set...'

Anya Taylor-Joy reveals why she rejected a potential role in a Disney Channel pilot to star as the lead character in Robert Eggers' hit 2015 horror movie, The Witch. Eggers' directorial debut saw Taylor-Joy star alongside Ralph Ineson, Kate Dickie, Harvey Scrimshaw, Ellie Grainger, and Lucas Dawson in the A24-distributed film.

SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY In an interview with Harper's Bazaar, Taylor-Joy reveals that on the same day that she was cast in her breakout role of Thomasin in The Witch, she had also been offered a role in a pilot episode for an undisclosed Disney Channel series.

"I remember it was the same day I got asked to be in a Disney Channel pilot, and it was so exciting to be offered anything at all that I ran around the house like a loon. But I just had this really good feeling about ‘The Witch’ that made me willing to forego the Disney experience for the thing that felt unknown to me, the thing that felt sacred.

Outside of her work with Eggers, Taylor-Joy followed her role in The Witch with a number of roles in slow-paced thrillers and horror films that tackle more subtle and psychological themes. Most notably, Taylor-Joy was cast in features including Split, Glass, Last Night in Soho, and The Menu, which sees her tackling stories and characters that often address darker themes and more frightening content, seeing her become associated with those genres and tackling darker, mature storytelling.

Despite Taylor-Joy's fearing her acting career future following her breakout role in The Witch, the star has quickly become one of the most highly-praised rising stars of the film industry in the late 2010s, earning critical acclaim for her performances across multiple genres.
