We spoke to TheWhiteLotus season 2 cinematographer Xavier Grobet about capturing the beauty of Sicily, collaborating with creator Mike White, and his proudest moment in the show:
Warning: SPOILERS for The White Lotus season 2The White Lotus season 2 accomplished the rare achievement of taking the best parts of its inaugural season and turning them into something bigger, bolder, and arguably even better. Series creator Mike White moved the show from Hawaii to Sicily for the second season and, with the exception of the fantastic Jennifer Coolidge, swapped out its cast for another group of talented actors.
I was also trying to follow some of the guidelines that they created on season one, because it's very specific. I think it went a little farther this time, but the whole psychological atmosphere that the show has, the waves that everybody loves, the ocean, the nature - they become part of the show. The main difference was that this season, we had the freedom of going outside of the hotel, as opposed to the first season in Hawaii.
It definitely feels like every day is sunny, and everything is nice all the time, but I know you shot the show in February, in the offseason. Was it hard to make winter and spring look and feel like summer? Xavier Grobet: It was. During prep, we were close to having a full moon. I asked for a Sony a7S III to have with me to do some shots taking advantage of the full moon. With that camera shooting at 10,000 ISO, you get beautiful shots with just moonlight. After prepping, I would just go out with a camera around town and grab some shots of the moon reflected on the water, or lights on the water - whatever I found.
Xavier Grobet: More than the characters themselves, I think it's more about what the scene is about. If the scene is about the place, then you don't need that close-up. When the girls go to the palazzo where they're going to spend the night, it's all about the building, so the coverage between them is in wide shots. It's not about them, it's about where they are.
It's hard to plan everything shot-by-shot. I've done it, and it also works, but when you're there in the situation, sometimes you have plans for bigger stuff and time is running out, so you have to solve the scene the best way you can at the moment.
