The Wayback Machine is back online but other Internet Archive services are limited for the time being.
The Internet Archive was the target of a massive cyberattack last week that brought the site to its knees for days.
Unfortunately, disruption wasn’t the endgame of the attack and cybercriminals managed to exfiltrate the data of 31 million users. This data included usernames, email addresses and passwords. If you haven’t yet, now is the best time to update your passwords, especially if you reuse them.Since the attack the Internet Archive has been working hard to get the Wayback Machine up to fighting form again.
The attack was claimed by a hacking collective calling itself BlackMeta. The group has been linked to other cyberattacks including a DDoS attack on a Middle Eastern financial institution. The reasoning behind the attack was as weak as it comes. The group reportedly targeted the Internet Archive because it’s a US company and the US government supports Israel. We say this is a weak excuse because the Internet Archive is an independent non-profit and isn’t affiliated with the US government.
