, accused in the death of a Houston police sergeant, has been extended into a nearly three-month break amid the hospitalization of the defendant's defense attorney, officials said. Judge Ana Martinez in the 179th District Court extended the recess to Nov. 7 on Monday as the jury returned.Soliz's attorney, Paul Looney, was recently hospitalized and"underwent emergency surgery," according to court records outlining the defense team's attempt to call for a mistrial. The trial initially came to a halt Aug. 1 after a juror tested positive for COVID-19. Prosecutors were then poised to rest their side of the case with witnesses who were working at the Cactus King nursery and another neighboring business at the time of the fatal shooting.Judge Martinez said the trial, once it resumes, will continue for two more weeks. The trial will coincide with the two-year anniversary of Rios' death.
