Melvin, or “Toxie” as he soon becomes known, uses his new mutant body to fight crime in the most gruesome manner imaginable. The Toxic Avenger’s many movies saw the antihero go on a lot of increasingly absurd adventures, but all of the character’s appearances shared one thing in common. Even though the tone of The Toxic Avenger is often juvenile and outright childish, the movies are firmly R-rated.
The Toxic Avenger Remake Can't Use Child Violence For Laughs While director Macon Blair’s upcoming remake of The Toxic Avenger will push boundaries judging by its R-rating, the reboot can’t replicate the original movie’s most infamous punchline. In a wild scene that remains jarring to this day, some joyriding villains intentionally hit a little boy on his bike and, upon realizing he isn’t dead, reverse over his head in a luridly graphic close-up.
The Toxic Avenger is full of this sort of off-color jokes whose punchlines rely mostly on shocking the viewer into laughter. There are references to child trafficking, a lot of assault scenes, and one scene wherein a sadistic criminal shoots a blind person’s guide dog. The Toxic Avenger is comically downbeat and bleak but presents all of this horrific content in a campy, ludicrous manner that makes it almost impossible to take seriously.
Why The Toxic Avenger’s Taboo Jokes Made The Original Movie A Cult Classic The Toxic Avenger isn’t famous despite its nastiness but rather because of it. This presents a pretty big problem for The Toxic Avenger’s reboot, which won’t arrive with the same level of audience goodwill as the original movie.
