Tropical Storm Barry has formed in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall Saturday along the Louisiana coast. Follow live updates:
Much of costal Louisiana — including cities like New Orleans, Grand Isle and Franklin — is under a storm surge watch as more rain and severe weather approaches from the Gulf of Mexico.
As of Thursday morning, at least 14 cities and towns in Louisiana are under a storm surge watch, three are under a storm surge watch and tropical storm watch and 28 are under a storm surge watch and hurricane watch, according to theRising waters moving inland from the shoreline could cause dry areas near the coast to flood. The National Weather Service said the shoreline could rise three to six feet in the areas under a watch.
With a storm surge watch, there is a possibility of life-threatening flooding from rising shorelines within 48 hours, the the National Weather Service explained. That's opposed to the more serious storm surge"warning," which means there is a danger of life-threatening floods within 36 hours.
