The stunning 14th century fortress in danger of being swallowed by the sea
A gorgeous, medieval castle on a small island in Cumbria is in danger of being lost to time and tide, it is being warned.
English Heritage Estates Director Rob Woodside explains: “Erosion along England’s coastline is nothing new but the rate of land loss that we have seen over the past few years is alarming, and some scenarios indicate that sea levels could increase by up to a metre by the end of the century. “The answer is to reduce our reliance on increasingly expensive gas and oil by investing in cheap and clean homegrown renewables and a nationwide programme to insulate our homes.” Similarly, Cumbrian conservationist Matt Staniek, who has campaigned vigorously against alleged water pollution in Windermere, said the issue showed climate change was a danger.
In the stark warning by English Heritage, five other landmarks are also flagged up as in danger of being lost to time and tide. These include the legendary Tintagel Castle in Cornwall, Bayard’s Cove Fort, which is a Tudor fort in Devon, Garrison Walls, in Scilly, Hurst Castle in Hampshire, which was built by Henry VIII and Calshot Castle, also in Hampshire and built by Henry VIII.
The government spokesperson said shoreline management plans provided long-term plans for managing the flood and coastal erosion risks, developed and owned by local councils and coastal protection authorities, with local authorities able to understand their coastline and develop the most appropriate approaches to manage risk through shoreline management plans and local planning policies.
