Meanwhile, Meghan actually sported the elegant Cartier Tank design long before she met Harry. The formerstar bought herself a two-tone version of the Tank Française back in 2012, which she engraved with “To M.M. From M.M.” on the back. “I plan to give it to my daughter one day,” she said in a past interview. “That’s what makes pieces special, the connection you have to them.”
But Diana and Meghan are far from the only high-profile fans to have worn Cartier’s Tank design, with the likes of Jackie Kennedy, Andy Warhol and Michelle Obama all sporting the famous timepiece. So powerful is the allure of the Cartier design that Kim Kardashian paid a staggering $379,500 for Kennedy’s watch – gifted to her by her brother-in-law, Prince Stanislaw “Stas” Radziwill – at a Christie’s auction in 2019.
Designed by Louis Cartier in 1917, the Tank was named after the British military tanks that helped defeat the German forces at the Battle of the Somme in 1916. Created to look like a bird’s-eye view of a tank, the two vertical brancards running down the sides of the rectangular watch face are meant to emulate treads, while the dial represents the cockpit. Also influenced by the Bauhaus movement, the pared-back design became an instant hit when it arrived in stores in 1919.
With Cartier’s Tank just as popular now as it was over a century ago, its appeal is unlikely to wane any time soon, despite the advent of smartphones and smart watches. As Andy Warhol once said, “I don’t wear a Tank watch to tell the time. In fact, I never wind it. I wear a Tank because it’s the watch to wear.”
