On the 60th anniversary of MLK’s 'I have a dream speech', SMU scholar analyzes the influence of Southern Methodists on MLK
He sought to stir bravery and courage for the movement by describing Meredith’s recent successful effort to integrate the University of Mississippi: “Some day the South will recognize its real heroes. They will be the James Merediths, courageously and with a majestic sense of purpose facing jeering and hostile mobs and the agonizing loneliness that characterizes the life of the pioneer.
Sixty years later, we reflect on the propensity for King’s dream shared on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to yet become a present reality. That reflection should include a careful study of the words, actions and heroes that led to that momentous and historic day Aug. 28, 1963. With such reflection, we can “speed up that day when all of God’s children, black men and white men, Jews and Gentiles, Protestants and Catholics will be able to join hands and sing in the words of the old Negro spiritual, free at last, free at last, thank God almighty we are free at last.”Dr. Ben Voth is professor of rhetoric and director of debate and speech at SMU.
