The Sky is Everywhere
Lennie lives with her Grams and her stoner uncle Big . And she has lost interest in what she usually enjoys. A talented clarinetist bound for Julliard, she stops playing music, relinquishing her position of the first chair to her band nemesis. She also fails to communicate with her best friend Sarah . While all she wants to do is re-readLennie deals with her grief by writing poems and notes to her sister and leaving them in random places around town.
As Lennie mourns her sister she gets close to Bailey's boyfriend Toby because they both feel as if the other one is the only one who understands their pain. The two begin having a secret affair that is rooted in their grief. At the same time, Lennie meets a new student at school, a guitarist who loves music as much as she does, Joe . Although it is framed as a love triangle, I didn't see it like that.
However, even though the character of Lennie is a rich one, the rest of the characters appear thinly-sketched and underutilised. Jandy Nelson adapted the script from her book. Perhaps she was too close to the source material. She expected audiences to already have a vested interest in the side characters and did not do enough to introduce them to the audience. They all have a familiarity about them, like we should know more or that more will be revealed later, but then it doesn't pay off.
