An episode-by-episode breakdown of what to expect from Netflix's The Sandman
, the first two volumes of the trade paperback collection of the series – remains very faithful to the comics. Some changes have been made, however, to enable its transition from page to screen and to bring it up to date.
Like the comics, arguably the least accessible and gripping is the first episode. It sets the stage for what is to come but barely hints at what it all means and why, frankly, viewers should care. It's a crucial story that, I'm sure, like its comics counterpart, will only improve with further viewings. It already has Charles Dance doing his best villain thing – but if you decide to give the Sandman a try, definitely don't judge it by its first episode. Just don't skip it either.
Finishing off this mini-arc is the already infamous 24/7, that has Morpheus squaring off against a mortal, John Dee . Over the past few episodes, we learn he's been corrupted by Morpheus' Dream Stone. He conducts a particularly deranged experiment on a diner full of innocents before the two finally square off for control of the Dreaming.
