‘The Queen is dead. God Save the King’: Behind the scenes at derailed citizenship ceremonies. 🔴 As the citizenship ceremony drew to a close, a new oath was spoken for the first time in 70 years: “The Queen is dead, long live the King!”.
“When it first went under way there were a lot of preliminary things that had to happen first, they had to confirm our identity, and things like that,” says Mr Sachs. Half an hour later, the ceremony began, just as the news of the Queen’s death broke.
Although Mr Sachs has always been aware of the Queen as a head of state, he doesn’t feel emotionally connected to her. “It doesn’t cause me any kind of grief. I think most Canadians don’t think about the Crown and don’t pay much mind to the fact that we are a constitutional monarchy,” says Mr Sachs. “But it definitely is interesting to think now, throughout Canada, all these sorts of things are going to change; stamps and bank notes,” he says.
MacKay is glad he got to swear an oath to the Queen while he could. “The Queen’s passing makes it a little more special,” says Mr MacKay. “Our milestones are connected with her and her milestones.” He adds: “She was the backdrop to our lives.” At the ceremony they also received a small gift from the city of Bradford, “which my wife thought was quite lovely,” he says. The image of the Queen has long been present at such ceremonies.
“The official doing the ceremony seemed to treat it a bit tongue in cheek,” she adds. “We were each individually called up to receive our certificate and have a photo with the officials. Afterwards I got a photo with the cutout,” she tells. “It was amusing to me as an American, but I appreciated the tears and joy of others receiving UK citizenship. It’s a long process, and some were asylum seekers and others who had had a far less easy path than me,” she reflects.
