Don’t worry, Rutgers-Maryland isn’t going anywhere
The Big Ten released a new reminder yesterday that, yes, USC and UCLA are really joining the conference. Who remembers Big Ten hero Reggie Bush? It still sounds so weird., though. A quick rundown of the “Flex Protect Plus” framework: No longer will the bloody winner of the East gauntlet get to play a West patsy in the conference title game. Makes sense. Those are staying. Each school gets up to three permanent opponents, though many only have one. Everyone else rotates.
So we keep USC-UCLA and of course Ohio State-Michigan. Michigan also keeps Michigan State on the schedule. You can see the full list in , but — with apologies to both fanbases — I cackled at Rutgers-Maryland making the cut as a permanent rivalry. Someone make me a hype video for this storied Big Ten matchup.Thanks to expansion, the Big Ten and SEC are adding to their already-difficult slates in 2024, when the Playoff will expand to 12 teams. Give some extra credit for that early non-conference game.
