The challenges of accessing the NDIS can be extreme for those living in remote and regional areas, where the scheme is hardest to access, but can have an enormous impact.
People with disabilities in remote and regional parts of the Northern Territory say it's a struggle to access NDIS support.
Desperate for help, she applied for the National Disability Insurance Scheme , and despite a year-long wait for Christina to be assessed, the outcome was life-changing.With the help of two full-time carers and a team of specialists, Christina was able to have her PEG removed — a tube that's inserted through the skin and into the stomach.But last year, the family received a letter notifying them that Christina's carer support would be reduced by half.
"The NDIS is the best thing that's ever happened to the disability community … I think we all have a responsibility to support it and get it right."It's in the bush where the complexities of accessing and delivering disability services are most pronounced. Much of what happens at Catholic Care NT's hub seems simple – participants making cups of tea, watching football or eating a meal — but Chrissy says daily living support is integral to building independence.
"It can go from money that gets paid ongoing if you sign up to them, it can also be cigarettes, or a mobile phone, or a $50 sign-up," Chrissy said.With more people reliant on the system than ever, Chrissy says implementing sustainable funding models and prioritising effective services is crucial.
