A letter addressed to her begins: “We say this to you with the deepest regrets: the Oscar you received was given by mistake — you must return it. We are giving you one more week to enjoy its presence in your home, but after that period of time you must mail it back to LA, where we will give it to the rightful best adapted screenplay: All Quiet on the Western Front.”
The letter continues, noting that the error was realized on Oscar night, but that the Academy “did not want another ‘Year of the Moonlight,’” a reference to the 2017 mix-up that briefly named La La Land and not Moonlight as best picture. It adds: “We also did not want it to get all over your local news, as the citizens of Toronto would probably be quite irritated.”Article content
Lest Polley grow suspicious that the oddly formatted letter was perhaps an April Fool’s prank from one of her children, it points out in italics that, while she may have received the news on April 1, “this is not a joke. This is much too cruel to be a joke, ergo we deeply apologize for any inconvenience we may has caused you.”
Polley shared the crushing news on Twitter, noting: “My eleven-year-old swung low for April Fools Day this year. #AprilFoolsDay”
