Before Bruce Wayne was terrorized by his twisted counterpart, the Batman Who Laughs, he encountered an equally bizarre fusion: Batzarro! Obsessed with shooting people in alleys, Batzarro actually admires the Dark Knight and wants to join his mission.

One of Batman's biggest nightmares, the Batman Who Laughs, fused the Caped Crusader with his most hated enemy. However, a character that emulated everything Batman feared about himself appeared much earlier than Bruce’s grinning doppelgänger.

The Batman Who Laughs came from the minds of Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo who introduced the character in Dark Nights: Metal. Hailing from the Dark Multiverse, he is a Batman that evokes one of Bruce Wayne’s biggest fears, namely what would happen if he ever killed the Joker. The Batman Who Laughs blended Joker’s chaotic nature with Bruce’s determination to create one of the deadliest characters in the DC Universe.

Fans can see several shared elements between the Batman Who Laughs and Batzarro, such as creepy eyeless cowls, chains and, of course, eerie smiles stretched across their faces. While it may seem the similarities of the two are superficial, the two actually have one crucial component in common: they both have origins connected to the Joker. While the Batman Who Laughs got his start from a potent strain of Joker venom, Batzarro was created by the Joker utilizing remnants of Mr.

As his last gag before being killed by Batman, Earth-22 Joker poisoned his world's Batman to become like him. The resulting Batman Who Laughs wound up destroying his planet, before later attempting to conquer all of creation. The character was the horrifying and logical result of putting the two archenemies together. Batzarro, on the other hand, fuses Batman with the less disturbing Bizarro to create a more friendly, albeit still deadly, fusion.

The characterizations of Bizarros as misguided heroes helps illustrate that darker isn't necessarily evil. For Batman, it's better he sees shades of his worst self in someone like Batzarro rather than the Batman Who Laughs.
