The National Prosecuting Authority's competence to prosecute so-called state capture cases suffered another blow with the acquittal of former Hawks North West General Jan Mabula on kidnapping and torture charges.
On Tuesday, the Gauteng High Court in Johannesburg delivered a scathing judgment against the NPA in acquitting Mabula and his seven co-accused on 10 cumulative charges, namely kidnapping, assault with the intent to do bodily harm, and extortion. He was accused alongside Matome Kgorane, Samuel Kutumela, Ismael Dawood, Adam Moahloli, Mpikwa Makhubu, Mfana Makutu and Israel Mdluli – all seven of whom were part of Mabula's investigation unit.
