The top 40 chippies in the UK have been announced - and there's just one in Nottinghamshire to make the cut. That said the organisers, the National Federation of Fish Friers, have incorrectly located the county's sole representative in Lincolnshire.
Angell's Fisheries, in Newark, is bidding to scoop the prestigious crown, as it goes head to head with other finalists for Fish and and Chip Takeaway of the Year. The family-run chip shop, in Barnby Gate, has operated since 1905 and is the oldest in the town.
Now in its 36th year the awards acknowledges and champions businesses and individuals. A panel of experts put hopeful entrants through an extensive judging process and tested the businesses on best practice, environmental issues, product knowledge and their responsibilities as an employer.
‘Fish and Chip Takeaway of the Year is a notoriously difficult category to stand out in, but the panel of experts had many tough decisions to make. However, we’ve selected an exceptional shortlist that showcases the unwavering passion, dedication and excitement that the fish and chip industry brings to British culture."
The winner will be revealed on February 28 2024 at an awards ceremony at the Park Plaza Westminster Bridge in London. Earlier this year, Angell's Fisheries appeared in Fry Magazine's top 50 chip shops the UK.
