, but as minority-owned businesses grow—black women, for example, are currently the fastest-growing group of entrepreneurs in America—so are spaces for them.
The more established co-working spaces are waking up to this opportunity, too: In response to backlash over its membership demographics, The Wing has been doubling down on its efforts to attract every kind of working professional. Early last year, it opened up membershipand in December, it announced to its members that it would be bringing on an executive to lead a diversity, equity and inclusion strategy—an attempt to send the message that it’s not a club exclusive to affluent white women.
For its members—entrepreneurs in business, arts, activism and wellness fields—Blackbird offers sound booths, galleries, private offices and rehearsing rooms—plus, like competitors The Wing, Riveter and Luminary, a calendar booked with events, but they’re centered on women of color and the subjects they care about. In January, the space has hosted speakers including former Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.
