In 2014, Firepay, in partnership with Standard Bank, launched SnapScan, the first mobile payment app in SA that set the wheels in motion toward ditching cash and plastic cards in the country.
But as more people got used to scanning QR codes and more players adopted the technology, banks were already heading for the next big thing.
