Exclusive: Ambulance star Eiza Gonzalez reveals the most surprising thing about working with director Michael Bay. 'He's like a kid... He's such a mischievous child in this daunting, terrifying body named Michael Bay.'
Ambulance star Eiza Gonzalez reveals the most surprising thing about working with Michael Bay. The filmmaker started in the 1990s by directing music videos for artists like Meat Loaf, Aerosmith, and Lionel Richie, which caught the attention of producer Jerry Bruckheimer, who selected him to helm his first feature-length film, the buddy-cop classic Bad Boys.
Since Transformers: The Last Knight in 2017, Bay has opted for one-off action-thrillers like 6 Underground. His next movie, Ambulance, releasing in theaters on April 8, sticks to that trend. The high-octane thriller stars Jake Gyllenhaal and Yahya Abdul-Mateen as two adoptive brothers who rob a bank and hijack an ambulance during their ill-fated getaway, taking two hostages. One of them is an EMT onboard the ambulance named Cam Thompson, played by Eiza Gonzalez.
I think that getting to know Michael was the most surprising part because he is such a – he will hate me for saying this – but he's such a kid. He's like a kid. I mean, the other day we were in Berlin, he's such a geek. He was showing us this video of him at the beach, pretending he's cracking his neck, but he had a bottle of water in the back and he's like,"Look at me. I have a bottle of water in the back!" He's such a child.
Working with Bay is likely a revelatory experience for many actors, as Gonzalez's comments reveal, considering his public image that has been shaped over the past few decades. Michael Bay's movies are often characterized by bombastic explosions, rapid-fire editing, gratuitous use of slow motion, themes of jingoism, and casual misogyny.
For many cinephiles, Michael Bay represents everything wrong with modern blockbuster filmmaking. However, his success is undeniable; he is currently sitting as the fourth highest-grossing director, just ahead of James Cameron. It remains to be seen if Bay can lure audiences out to theaters for films outside of the Transformers franchise, as his last theatrical release, 13 Hours, struggled to turn a profit. Only time will tell when Ambulance debuts in theaters this Friday.
