Rhule is the first NFL head coach to be axed this season. October is when the first head coach is canned each season. Other recent examples: John Gruden in Las Vegas last year, Bill O’Brien in Houston in 2020, Jay Gruden in Washington in 2019 and Hue Jackson in Cleveland in 2018. Dennis Allen was fired by the Raiders on the last day of September in 2017.Owner Tepper gave Rhule a seven-year contract in January 2020, and ESPN said Rhule is still owed “north of $40 million.
With Rhule’s departure, Arthur Smith of the Atlanta Falcons — hired 21 months ago — ascends to the dean of NFC South head coaches. Dennis Allen and Todd Bowles both were hired earlier this calendar year.The 4-1 Bills are averaging 30.
Secondly, head coach Sean McVay had been hinting at this since early last month, but he hammered it home at the post-game podium Sunday — that too many of his players aren’t playing up to previous Rams standards, perhaps because they just aren’t good enough, or for whatever other preventative reason.
