The all-electric eSprinter points the way to the future of Mercedes-Benz vans.
. The battery feeds an electric motor that drives the rear axle. The single motor at the rear will launch with two different outputs: 100 kW and 150 kW. For those who don’t have an online kilowatt-to-horsepower converter, we’ll take care of that for you: 134 hp and 201 hp.All in, the folks at Mercedes say this package is good enough to carry a gross vehicle weight of 4.25 tons. Obviously, that total weight includes the vehicle itself, a figure Mercedes has yet to hand out to the public.
Mercedes has split the eSprinter into, effectively, three different sub-modules. The first module is tucked away in the front storage area and lays claim to the high-voltage components, according to Mercedes. This means the main electrical architecture is basically unchanged regardless of the rest of the eSprinter’s shell. The second module is the battery, with the e-axle taking up the third major point of this EV van.
Mercedes is setting up to launch the new eSprinter in the back half of 2023. That means the folks at the Charleston, South Carolina, and the Ludwigsfelde, Germany, plants are already gearing up to start churning out these BEV vans. There’s no word on, but considering the base Sprinter currently starts at $45,195, you can probably expect this BEV version won’t be cheaper. Still, it will be interesting how these start rolling out into various fleets when they hit the road.
