🇹🇳 The Mediterranean winter sun wonder with ruins to rival Rome and pastries to rival Paris

Half an hour north of Tunis, Carthage is a historical highlight. Founded by seafaring Phoenicians in the ninth century BC, Carthage was Rome’s fiercest rival. It was destroyed in the second century BC and then rebuilt on an even grander scale by the conquering Romans.
It was then that the colour scheme evolved, and maintaining it now an act of conservation. “Locals call it the original Santorini,” Hammi added, as we looked out from the clifftop. “It’s trendy here, but the fishermen are long gone. They can’t afford to live here.”Go south and you pass through the Atlas Mountains that hedge Tunis against the Mediterranean before reaching the holiday resorts of Sousse.
Even with a week’s all-inclusive accommodation costing as little as £150 – cheaper than most rents in the UK, the beach in Sousse couldn’t keep me long, as the allure of antiquities proved too strong.
