Choreographer Kelly McInnes’s new work questions the negative effects of unattainable beauty standards.

Where: KW Production Studio Choreographer Kelly McInnes has stood up to the thing that caused her pain by turning it into art.

“I was recovering from an eating disorder. I had those beauty magazines around me my whole life. I struggled with body image issues and an eating disorder for quite some time so I wanted to make something to help me in my journey through that,” said McInnes, who started thinking about creating the piece back in 2015.

Related Luckily McInnes’s desire to change grew and she found herself compelled to take a look at different, healthier ways to express herself. The timing couldn’t be better as McInnes, who grew up in Terrace, was seriously considering walking away from the discipline. SHINY is a tight, minimal piece that uses movement and McInnes’s skills as a collage artist to highlight the relentless assault of unattainable beauty standards.
